Science Week
Science Week is December 1-5, 2014. That week includes the Super Science Sale, Family Science Night, and the Science Fair. Please read the sections below for more information on each.
The Super Science Sale starts Monday morning (December 1) at 7:30 am and runs until Friday afternoon (December 5) at 2:00 pm.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: How does the sale benefit Old Union?
A: We get to keep 25% of the net total. This money goes toward purchasing lab consumables and equipment to make science lessons more exciting and engaging! Q: What are the store's hours? A: Regular store hours are 7:30 am - 3:30 pm, but the store will be open until 6:30 pm on Thursday, December 4. Q: What items are for sale, and how much do they cost? A: The company brings different materials each year, so I won't know our exact inventory until the Friday before the sale. Items typically range from $0.25 - $30.00, with most items being under $10.00. Click HERE to view a list of products and prices from a couple years ago -- prices shouldn't be much different than that this year. Q: What forms of payment do you accept? A: We accept cash, credit card, and checks. Please make all checks payable to Heath Scientific. |
Q: What's this I hear about live animals?
A: The first year we had the sale, the company brought fighting betta fish only. The second year, however, they came with the fish, hermit crabs, frogs, and tarantulas! I won't know which animals are available until the Monday of the sale. Students must have a parent present, a signed parent note, OR a parent e-mail to me {click here to e-mail} in order to purchase a live animal. If you are sending your student with a note, please make sure to indicate if you want your student to bring home or avoid a certain animal. If a student purchases a pet during the sale, the pet will remain in the lab until the end of the day so as to minimize academic disruptions. Q: Do students preview the sale like they do for book fair? A: Yes. All students will preview the sale with their class sometime during the day on Monday, December 1. Q: When can students shop? A: Each class has a set "shopping time" on Tuesday, December 2. Other than that, students may come to the store before/after school, during recess, or during any free time they have in class. |
Family Science Night is Thursday, December 4 from 4:30 – 6:30 pm. Science Fair projects will be displayed in the library, science investigations will take place in the cafeteria, the science sale will continue in the lab, and the Fort Worth Astronomical Society will set up telescopes on the playground (from 5:30 - 6:30 only -- weather permitting). All children should be accompanied by an adult.
Entries for the 2014-2015 Old Union Science Fair must be submitted no later than Friday, November 7, 2014.
Science Fair projects are due at school on Wednesday, December 3, 2014. Please bring them to school between the hours of 7:30 am - 3:00 pm so that Mrs. Karas can set them up for the judging that will take place on Thursday, December 4, 2014. Everyone is invited to view the Science Fair entries in the library during Family Science Night on Thursday, December 4, 2014 from 4:30 - 6:30 pm.
*The focus of the Old Union Science Fair is to encourage students to enjoy science and conduct their own investigations. Any student at Old Union is welcome to participate in the Science Fair. It is not required, but it is fun! This can be a family project, but we encourage students to do all that is appropriate for their age independently.
