Science Lab has officially started at Old Union! This blog will give you more information about what we do during kindergarten science lab. If you'd like to receive these posts in your e-mail inbox, find the box on the right that looks like this:
Type your e-mail address into the box, and click "subscribe." You should get an e-mail almost immediately to confirm that you'd like all of the blog updates sent to your inbox. This is a great option for those of you that would like to read what's happening in the science lab but get so busy that you may forget to check the blog. :)
Behavior:
Science lab will utilize both Class Dojo and the school-wide ticket system as a behavior incentive program. You should have received a Class Dojo parent code already; this will allow you to log in to your child's account to see his/her behavior in the lab. {This code is different than the music class code.} If you did not receive a parent code, please e-mail me! Click HERE to learn more about how Class Dojo is used in science lab.

If you're on Instagram, check us out at @MrsKarasClass. If you're on Twitter, read our tweets by following @MrsKaras. On both accounts, 4th grade pictures are labeled with the hashtag #OUES4th. If you're interested in seeing just 4th grade pictures, search for the hashtag (or view the pictures on the 4th grade main page by clicking HERE.)
Special Opportunities:
Old Union 4th graders have special opportunities to be part of two different science clubs:
- Green Team (recycling club) meets once a week on Thursdays after school. Learn more about it by clicking HERE. Green Team will hopefully start by September 25th, so please sign up quickly if your child would like to join!
- Lab Assistants (special science helpers) meet once a week on Tuesdays during 4th grade recess. Learn more about it by clicking HERE.
This Month:
This month, we are focusing on what a scientist is and can do, how to be safe in the lab, and tools scientists use. Not only do we practice measuring with new tools (such as triple beam balances), but we also learn how to make wet mount slides for microscopes.
Home Connection(s):
- Talk about who can be a scientist. We're really focusing on understanding that everyone can be a scientist -- scientists aren't just men in white lab coats! Science is everywhere, so scientists can be anyone! On that note, if you are a scientist or know of one, please feel free to send in a 4 x 6 picture with the name and science job title to be featured on the science lab bulletin board. I'm looking for community doctors, food scientists, botonists, zookeepers, engineers, etc.
- Letting your child participating in preparing a meal will help him/her practice measuring. You could also use this website to practice on a virtual triple beam balance.
Upcoming Events:
- In October, 4th grade students will complete a creative project in Science Lab. If you have any craft supplies you don't need (markers, tape, pipe cleaners, tissue paper, craft poms, construction paper, beads, toothpicks, yarn, foil, etc.), we would love to take those off your hands! Students can bring them to Science Lab at any time.
- The submission deadline for the first annual Old Union Science Fair is on November 7. Please click HERE for more information.
- 4th graders will complete a project in our next unit that requires one clean, 2-liter bottle. Please bring your donation(s) to your homeroom teacher.
